ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

As the government shutdown persists, New Mexico lawmakers are debating the cost and necessity of a special session intended to address funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

"We're in the midst of a lot of chaos at the federal level," Democratic Majority Floor Leader Reena Szczepanski said, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the shutdown.

"Our New Mexicans are no doubt hurting because of this," Republican Party of New Mexico Chairwoman Amy Barela added, emphasizing the impact on local residents.

The shutdown has left many wondering when it will end -- and when programs like SNAP will receive funding.

"Our families are facing hunger," Szczepanski.
