A Hungarian man has been sentenced to more than seven years in jail after trying to smuggle 9kg of methamphetamine into the country in blueberry powder packaging.
The man arrived at Melbourne Airport on a flight from Los Angeles on December 17 last year, and was stopped by Australian Border Force during the security check.
After examining the man’s suitcase, ADF officers found 9kg of methamphetamine hidden inside packets of blueberry powder.
He told police he was paid more than $14,000 to carry “watches” into the country and intended to meet a person at a nearby hotel to hand it over.
The 9kg of meth had an estimated street value of $8.3m.
The Hungarian national pleaded guilty to one count of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.
