In this Forum installment, we wanted you to focus on elections – not the New York City mayoral race and other contests that have recently dominated headlines – but the one that made history in 2024, pitting then-Vice President Kamala Harris against former President Donald Trump.
Harris had stepped in as the last-minute Democratic presidential nominee after President Joe Biden withdrew, facing questions about age and competency.
Trump, whose denial of his 2020 reelection loss led to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, and his second impeachment, shrugged off 34 felony convictions to become the 2024 Republican nominee.
We wanted to know if you regretted your vote in that presidential race. Or if you were happy with the candidate you chose and would do it again if the 2024 election were held tomorrow – with the same people on the ballot.
The volume of responses we got was truly stunning. In the hundreds of submissions, we read how most of you said you had no regrets about your vote and that there was no question you would check the same name on the ballot, given the choice. Many of you said you felt the opposing candidate was unfit, "toxic" or a danger to the Constitution and rule of law, and that your views have been reinforced by events since the 2024 election.
But some of you did have regrets, saying you had learned more about the candidates – or that you were disappointed in how the country is now being run. Some of you were sorry because you didn't vote and wished you had cast a ballot.
You can read a collection of these responses below, or send in your own to us at forum@usatoday.com using the subject line "Forum Vote."
I voted for Harris. One year later, I'm glad I did.
I voted for Kamala Harris in 2024. Nearly one year later, I'm very glad I did. I knew Donald Trump was a toxic leader, and he has proved me right many times over.
There is no way I would have voted for a person who had already proved that he will not support and defend the Constitution. Trump has again proved me right as he appears to be working to dismantle the Constitution. I am a 21-year Air Force veteran, and I took the oath to support and defend the Constitution against ALL enemies, and Trump is the Constitution's enemy. I cannot believe that a person who incited an insurrection was reelected. The 77 million people who voted for him are to blame for the downward spiral of our democracy!
I am extremely likely to vote in the 2026 midterm elections. And if the 2024 presidential election were held today – with the same candidates – I would 100% vote for Harris. She was and would still be the best candidate. I think some people did not vote for her because she is a Black Asian American woman, and I think that's sad.

I would vote for Trump again if the election were held today
I voted for Trump in 2024. He is trying to do exactly what he said he was going to do.
I'm angry with leftist Democrats whom I see as refusing to allow him to be the president by fighting his every step and by employing threats of violence and violent protests. Leftist Democrats seem to be inciting the general protest mobs to interfere, obstruct and undermine the rule of law.
I would vote the same way if the election were held again today. Trump is the only president in my lifetime to actually adhere to cutting the size and cost of government, a plank of the Republican Party for decades. I believe he is also upholding the Second Amendment, stopping illegal immigration, stopping the fentanyl epidemic and enforcing the rule of law.
I am extremely likely to vote in the midterm elections in 2026 and in the 2028 presidential election.

I'm a conservative who wrote in Mitt Romney. I stand by my vote.
For the 2024 presential election, I wrote in Mitt Romney, a former Republican presidential candidate who served as my state's senator.
As a conservative, I feel completely exonerated in my determination not to vote for Trump, or any other candidate on the ballot. Trump 2.0 is 10 times worse than 1.0, with norms, institutions and even constitutional checks falling left and right before a capricious and amoral authoritarian.
I'd do the same thing again if the election were held today with the same candidates – meaning I'd write in someone with the capacity and values to run the country honorably.
I'm extremely likely to vote in both the 2026 midterm elections and in the 2028 presidential election.
