A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for the rape of a doctor in a Glasgow city centre alley. Mihae-Nicolae Patran attacked the then 27-year-old victim as she took a shortcut through Mitchell Street in the early hours of November 26, 2023. The assault lasted approximately 40 minutes.
The victim, who was a stranger to Patran, managed to escape and sought help from a nearby taxi while still partially undressed. Following the incident, Patran was apprehended by the police.
This was not Patran's first brush with the law. He had previously been arrested for exposing himself to a woman on a train. During his initial court appearance, he shocked onlookers by performing a sex act while sitting in the dock.
Judge N McFadyen, who presided over the case at Glasgow High Court, described Patran as posing a "real danger to women." In addition to the nine-year prison term, the judge imposed a 12-year extended sentence, which includes three years of supervision following his release. This decision reflects the severity of Patran's actions and the potential risk he poses to the public.
