India reported 138 million cases of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in 2023, making it the country with the second-highest burden of the condition worldwide, according to a new global analysis published in The Lancet. China topped the list with 152 million cases.
CKD emerged as the ninth-leading cause of death worldwide in 2023, claiming nearly 15 lakh lives, according to a study led by researchers from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, along with teams from the US and UK.
CKD prevalence varies across regions. The highest rates were recorded in North Africa and the Middle East at 18%, followed by South Asia at nearly 16%, and over 15% in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the study.
