New Delhi: India’s transition towards clean energy halted as the nation slowed down the production of coal amid large stocks of coal, which are unused and lying at pitheads. According to CNBC-TV18, nearly 100 million tonnes (MT) of coal are lying in pitheads, and approximately only 2.05 MT of coal are being consumed daily for power generation.
Some sources confirmed that the peak power demand has been lower compared to normal, as the rainfall kept the temperature cool and reduced the thermal power demand. Earlier, India’s peak power went to 277 GW, but now, in 2025, it has been reduced to 240 GW and 245 GW.
The plans also propose that the import of natural gas for power generation will be phased out in a bid to curb both greenhouse gas emissions and import dependence.
