One man died and another was rescued from the water after their boat capsized in rough waters off Fire Island on Saturday afternoon, Suffolk County police said.

Christopher Sicignano, 68, of Lindenhurst, was operating a boat near the mouth of Fire Island Inlet shortly after 4 p.m. when the boat overturned, police said. Sicignano and his passenger, David Johnson, 70, of Lindenhurst, were thrown into the water, and the boat sank.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Suffolk County Police Department Marine Bureau officers arrived after a boater reported the capsize via UHF radio.

Rescuers attempted to revive Johnson but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip.
