LINCOLN, Neb. —

Lincoln police are investigating an in-custody death.

On Sunday, around 8 a.m., officers responded to a disturbance at a home near S. 54th and Meredeth streets, where a man in his 40s was reported to be having a mental health crisis.

When officers arrived, they found the man trying to enter the home.

Investigators say police took him into custody, searched him, and sat him in the back of the cruiser.

Investigators then say that when the man was able to move his hands to the front of his body, he pulled a firearm from inside his pants and shot himself.

He was transported to the hospital, where he died.

The officer whose cruiser was involved is not now administrative leave.
