Parents looking to take their children away on holiday during term time have been warned that it could end up hitting their pockets even harder than they think. A record number of families in England were fined in the last school year for unauthorised holidays.

In the last school year more than 443,000 fines were issued to parents taking their children out of school during term time to go on holiday, a 53 per cent increase since before the Covid pandemic. Some cite the prohibitively high cost of breaks during the school holidays, particularly when travelling abroad.
