An historic church in downtown Detroit brought mariners, historians, and family and friends of those lost on the Great Lakes on Sunday to mark the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Old Mariners’ Church paid tribute to the 29 mariners lost on the freighter and their families by ringing a replica bell 29 times and a 30th time for all lives lost.
“It really has been a privilege to be the bearers of that responsibility, to ring the bell 29 times, and we give God all the glory to be able to it,” the Rev. Todd Meyer said.
“We want to honor those who died on the Edmund Fitzgerald and remember them,” Meyer said in his sermon. “We’re praying that you would have an experience with God here, too, because we all are mourning … and you h
