UK tourists have been warned they could face major costs if they skip one key step when booking a holiday. Two in three have jetted off on holiday without any travel insurance, with half convinced nothing could possibly go wrong.
But 29 per cent of all holidaymakers have had to make a claim after things went awry either before or during their trip, with the average claim coming to around £4,500.
Emily Barnett, travel insurance expert at Compare the Market, which commissioned the research, said: "Taking out travel insurance should be as instinctive as booking your flights, giving you protection against unforeseen circumstances, for example should you need to cancel before you depart.
