Democrats are fuming at their own party after a coalition of moderate Senate Democrats joined with Republicans to take the first step in ending the longest-ever government shutdown on Sunday.

Eight Democratic senators bucked party leadership to vote for a spending deal that approves three bipartisan annual spending bills and will extend the rest of government funding until late January. In exchange, the Democrats were promised a mid-December vote on extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits that are expiring at the end of the year.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) voted against the deal. Schumer and other Democratic leaders have vowed to oppose any spending package that does not include an extension for those health care subsidies.
