Sunday was a rough day for Washington commanders, both the ones that play football and the one in charge of the United States armed forces.

But at least the football Commanders were actually giving an honest effort to do their job Sunday night.

The other one, who decided to waste valuable resources to take in a football game while his administration is attempting to withhold SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits from Americans who rely on them to eat — because the government is dug in on a shutdown he's attempting to use to lay off government workers — can’t say the same. And the fans in attendance at Northwest Stadium for the game between the Commanders and Detroit Lions let him know exactly how they feel about it all.

Donald Trump deserved every boo he received.

The concept of bad optics is something we discuss a lot in sports, especially lately with sports betting more pervasive and leagues needing to convince fans they have a trustworthy product. It’s only right we hold our elected officials to a higher standard — and these were awful optics for a president who was already divisive to begin with.

The same taxpayers struggling to make ends meet during the longest government shutdown ever are some of the same taxpayers that had to foot the bill for Trump to safely and securely become the first president to attend a regular-season NFL game since 1978. At that particular stadium, many of the people in attendance were likely government employees or friends and family of government employees not being paid. And Trump showed up for what? To have his butt kissed for an NFL salute to service ceremony that could've happened without him?

It mostly just proved how clueless he is. If this was the start of his campaign to have the next Commanders stadium named after him, it didn't go well. They clearly don't rock with you like that. If Trump was expecting any other reception than the one he got, he was mistaken.

Quick hits: MLB indictments ... Pats are back ... and more

  • Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz have been indicted for their alleged roles in fixing pitches in MLB games to win bets. Here's everything we know about the case.
  • The NFL messed up and let the Patriots be good again. Here's Christian D'Andrea with more on New England's rise back to the top.
  • The grossest NFL quarterbacks of Week 10 include Bryce Young's disintegration and Geno Smith's continuing downward spiral.
  • Ummm... does Tony Romo know what "DTF" means? Because the way he awkwardly used the acronym is definitely not how it used to be used.
