FORT SMITH — Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Clark has been promoted to chief of the Fort Smith Fire Department effective Monday.

The city announced the promotion in a news release Monday.

Clark replaces Chief Boyd Waters, who retired Oct. 31 after 25 years of service to the Fire Department. Waters was named chief in March 2023, succeeding Phil Christensen, who died Feb. 11, 2023, following a battle with cancer.

“I am honored to be entrusted with leading our department into the future. The greatness of the Fort Smith Fire Department comes from the brave men and women who have served in the past and continue to serve today,” Clark said in the release.

Clark has spent nearly 27 years at the Fire Department, the release states.
