CANTON, Ohio (WJW) -- A Canton police officer died following an accident on his way to work early Monday morning, the Canton Police Department confirmed to FOX 8 News.

Officer Dave Wolgamott was reportedly involved in an unspecified accident on the 800 block of Cherry Avenue Southeast just before 7 a.m. The officer was transported to the hospital where he later died of his injuries, police said.

Canton police said an investigation into the incident is ongoing and that Wolgamott will be greatly missed.

Wolgamott had been with Canton police since 2006 and was assigned to the patrol division and worked at the jail.

No other details are being shared at this time.
