As Winnipeg heads into another budget season and with an election year approaching, the numbers coming out of City Hall deserve a closer look.
Last week, the mayor proudly declared that “Winnipeg has the lowest municipal property taxes among major cities in Canada.” The statement was made in a City press release based on a benchmarking report prepared by the City of Calgary as part of its 2026 budget preview.

According to that report, Winnipeggers pay about $2,128 in municipal property taxes on a median-valued home — roughly 40% less than the six-city average. The mayor called this proof that Winnipeg is one of the most affordable large cities in the country and that residents “get strong value for their dollar.”
