CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Patrick Morrisey and state Agriculture Commissioner Kent Leonhardt helped the U.S. Marine Corps celebrate its 250th anniversary Monday.

A ceremony and cake cutting was held at the state Culture Center in Charleston.

“We celebrate not only in remembrance of great battles and heroes but in recognition of the enduring legacy of the Marine Corps,” Morrisey said.

Department of West Virginia Marines Corps League Commandant Jim McDade said the birth of the Corps should be celebrated.

“Today around the world, wherever there is a Marine, whether it’s a ceremony like this or a couple of Marines in a foxhole sharing a fruit cake from their MRE or a Marine sitting on a beach somewhere sipping a drink, they are celebrating the birth of our Corps,” McDade said.
