Hy-Vee will continue offering free and discounted meals as funding for food assistance programs remains tied up in courts amid the federal government shutdown.
The West Des Moines-based supermarket chain began offering free meals for children and low-cost meals for adults on Nov. 3 after the government on Nov. 1 failed to make payments under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which helps fund food purchases for about 42 million Americans each month.
Federal courts have ordered payments to resume. But the Trump administration appealed and Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on Friday, Nov. 7, granted a stay of the order to allow the appeals court more time to consider the issue.
In a news release, Hy-Vee announced the program will continue from 4-7 p.m. Nov.
