On Nov. 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address — a speech that has captivated millions for its profound impact on everyone who reads it.
It is simple, straightforward and hits everyone at the deepest part of their being. The words are also timeless, and I am convinced the historical lessons of Lincoln’s time need to be reinforced in all of us today.
The United States was “… a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure.”
In so many ways, I believe we are in exactly the same situation this nation was in 1863. We are divided as sharply as it was back then.
We haven’t taken up arms
