Salem City Councilor Vanessa Nordyke is proposing the city adopt a policy on accepting gifts and donations after a recent split council vote allowed largely anonymous donors to pay for additional police officers.
Salem city councilors will consider her motion at a meeting Monday .
If councilors approve the motion, staff would then prepare a policy for the council’s consideration at a later date.
Nordyke argued in her motion that such a policy is “in the interest of government, transparency and accountability.”
On Oct. 27, a split council voted 6-3 to accept a $180,000 gift from the city’s business community to help fund two more police officers on the city’s Homelessness Services Team.
Nordyke reluctantly voted to accept the gift and attempted to sway her colleagues to hold off on
