CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced Monday he is releasing an additional $2 million in state funds to food banks and pantries to combat hunger caused by the record-long federal government shutdown.

The new allocation brings the total state emergency funding provided during the 41-day shutdown to $13.1 million, according to the governor's office.

Morrisey emphasized that state resources must fill the gap created by the congressional impasse.

“From the beginning I’ve said we will not let our people go hungry,” Morrisey said in a statement. “No matter what happens in Washington, D.C., state government must step up and solve problems.”
