A Melbourne council has held a minute's silence following the death of a woman and a child in Dandenong Creek yesterday.

The 33-year-old woman and seven-year-old boy drowned after being swept away by water in the creek near Allan Street, Dandenong, about 3.45pm.

Victoria Police said it was believed the woman went to the aid of the child who had fallen into the water.

Police searched the creek and found the pair in the water but were unable to revive them.

Greater Dandenong Council paused for a minute's silence ahead of last night's council meeting to pay its respect.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti read a statement passing on the council's condolences to those affected by the tragedy.
