KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville City Council unanimously approved Mayor Indya Kincannon's proposal for an emergency ordinance to support food assistance programs in Knoxville as local food banks face growing demand.

The proposal will allocate $100,000 from the city’s unassigned fund balance to help address food shortages following the lapse of SNAP benefits.

The United Way of Greater Knoxville has agreed to match the city’s contribution with funds from private donors, bringing the total to $200,000 in additional support for local food providers.
