After the Great Lakes National Cemetery was forced to cancel its annual Veterans Day ceremony, which includes placing 30,000 flags at the gravesites, The Heroes Operation stepped in to help.
The organization has nearly 15,000 flags ready. That’s enough to mark almost half of the cemetery’s 38,000 gravesites. The Heroes Operation is also asking for the public’s help to make sure every grave is marked by a flag.
The Heroes Operation is asking volunteers to bring as 4-inch by 6-inch flags on sticks as possible; more than 20,000 are needed.
Organizers want volunteers to meet at noon on Veterans Day at a soccer field near the Great Lakes National Cemetery, 14770 N. Holly Road in Holly Township.
If at least 130 volunteers show up, the work should take an estimated two hours, according to Ant
