DAKOTA COUNTY, Neb. (KTIV) - Deer season is here, which means your chances of hitting a deer are at their highest than any other time of the year.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, the month of November is the highest for car accidents involving deer.

There are a few things you can do while you’re driving to decrease your risk of striking a deer or other large animal. One of the most important things is slowing down, especially in rural areas and at night.

If you do hit a deer, do your best to get your vehicle to the side of the roadway.

“Most times when vehicles hit deer, they won’t stop; they will continue rolling with damage,” said Sgt. Brian Fernau with the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office. “If you’re able to steer onto the shoulder and get your hazards turned on.“
