EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Thousands of families are struggling to put food on the table, which is why a local nonprofit organization is focused on giving back to those in need.

The Elisha Project provides food, personal hygiene products and other essentials to those who can't make ends meet. In the last week alone, volunteers handed out more than 225,000 pounds of food and essentials to about 3,500 families.

In this week's Street Stories Unpaved, host Mike Montecalvo sat down with founder George Castro to discuss why he's dedicated to making sure everyone has enough to eat.

Barbara Papitto, founder of Papitto Opportunity Connection, also joined the conversation and shared why her foundation has donated more than $100 million to provide critical services across the state.
