WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Former Winston-Salem Red Sox manager Bill Slack, a revered figure in minor league baseball and the winningest manager in Carolina League history, died Sunday, at the age of 92.
Slack, born in Petrolia, Ontario, Canada, in 1933, began his professional baseball journey in 1952 after signing with the Boston Red Sox. Although he never reached the Major Leagues as a player, he built a remarkable 24-year career as a manager and roving coach in the Red Sox system, dedicating much of his life to player development.
He managed the Winston-Salem Red Sox/Spirits for 13 seasons, guiding the team to four Carolina League championships and amassing 1,120 career wins. His leadership and longevity made him a cornerstone of Winston-Salem baseball and a mentor to generations of playe
