star Mike Smith was arraigned in a Halifax court on Monday on a charge of sexual assault.

Speaking with reporters after court, lawyer Stan MacDonald, who appeared on Smith's behalf, stressed that the allegations have not been proven.

“It will be tried in the court, it won’t be tried in the media, and in the meantime we ask that the privacy of everyone involved be respected,” he said.

Best known for playing Bubbles on the popular TV series, the charge against Smith is in relation to an alleged sexual assault in December 2017 in Dartmouth, N.S.

No other details have been disclosed.

The female complainant’s identity is protected under a publication ban.
