This weekend I traveled to Texas for my friend Daniel’s wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony in the beflowered outdoor terrace of the turn-of-the-20th-century lawyer and politician William Jennings Bryan’s former winter home.
It was nice to run into old high school friends and catch up. Lisa, after discussing someone’s divorce, joked that she hoped she might one day get the chance to do that too.
We all laughed a sad laugh, aware that Lisa, like millions of other Americans like her, wanted all the ups and downs associated with joining your life with another human, whether the hopeful beginning we had just witnessed or the sad end that affects so many old friends we knew.
