MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - McDowell County Sheriff Ricky T. Buchanan announced on Monday that he will not be seeking reelection after over 30 years of service.

Buchanan was elected sheriff in 2018. He previously served as chief deputy.

He has served as Co-Chair of the Auditing Committee with the NC Sheriff’s Association, Chair of the Corpening Foundation Board of Trustees, Chair of the Substance Abuse Work Group and has served on the Executive Board of Directors with the McDowell Health Coalition.

Buchanan has given his endorsement to his chief deputy Nathan Mace to be the next sheriff.
