SANTA FE, N.M. —
Both chambers of the New Mexico Legislature and the acting governor have approved to fund SNAP benefits through a special session amid the federal government shutdown .
The New Mexico House passed the resolution to fund food assistance by a 52-9 vote. The state Senate has also passed the legislation following the House approval.
The bill has been signed by Lt Gov. Howie Morales, who is the acting governor as Michelle Lujan Grisham attends the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Brazil. It was signed on Monday, Nov. 10.
The legislation will provide up to $20 million per week for food assistance. New Mexico will allocate $192 million total for SNAP funding.
The plan funding comes from unused Health Care Authority funds and from the state's emergency contingency fund.
