WASHINGTON — Maryland’s Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen shared his thoughts on a potential deal to end the longest government shutdown in US history.
The shutdown, which began on Oct. 1, stemmed from Democrats in the Senate collectively declaring they would refuse to sign any legislation that didn’t extend Affordable Care Act tax credits.
Those credits expire at the end of the year, and Senator Van Hollen says they’re vital for millions of Americans.
“The Republicans allowed these tax credits to lapse that help middle-class Americans better afford their health insurance,” he said. “Without diffusing that time bomb, it will explode and we’ll see an even bigger healthcare crisis across the country.”
