NEW ORLEANS — For generations, the intricate beadwork of the Mardi Gras Indians tells stories of pride, resilience, and culture.
But for one Big Chief, the next chapter is about something even more personal: the journey to save his sight.
Now, thanks to a donation, he and many others finally have access to a treatment that could save his sight and keep his passion alive.
With this donation, UMC has already done a number of special contact lens fittings, and 450 people are already on the waiting list for the treatment.
And one of them is a New Orleans culture bearer.
It's a tradition that goes back to the late 1800s. It's a labor of love and creativity, designing and then sewing each tiny bead in place.
