LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - A Lake Charles center is using fabric, thread, and time to give back to those who’ve given so much.

At the Ward 3 Martin Luther King Center, volunteers spent months crafting handmade quilts for veterans.

Travane Strong, a veteran, says finding work and support after serving was not easy.

“In the beginning, it was very hard; employers just didn’t want to deal with the veterans, Vietnam was still a hot issue, and I got the impression they were afraid of us. So, a lot of years of unemployment that I faced,” Strong said.

Strong’s wife, Kathy, says being married to someone who served is its own kind of service, one that often goes unnoticed.

“He went to reserve a lot on weekends, and he was gone a lot. Later, he shared some of his experiences and stories with me
