The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected a bid by a former Kentucky county official to overturn its landmark 2015 ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide.
The court denied an appeal from Kim Davis , the former Kentucky county clerk who now faces hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and legal fees for refusing to issue marriage licences after the court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges allowed same-sex couples to marry.
The court didn’t explain its reasoning to deny the appeal, which received widespread attention, in part, due to the court’s 6-3 conservative majority three years ago overturning Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to abortion that decision in 1973 established.
Since then, fears have swelled that Obergefell v. Hodges could be overturned.
