Aizawl: The voting for the by-election to Mizoram’s Dampa Assembly constituency began on Tuesday morning amid tight security measures, election officials said.

Men and women in large numbers queued for voting at the 41 polling stations in the Dampa Assembly segment, which started at 7 a.m. Polling would continue in the mixed-population Assembly constituency in Mamit district till 4 p.m., without any break.

In all, 20,790 voters, including 10,185 women, are eligible to cast their votes to decide the electoral fate of five candidates. The Dampa Assembly seat fell vacant following the death of Opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21.
