“It’s a little surprising, not really sure how to process it,” said Brian Cain, a friend of Kristie Gioe Thibodeaux. He told WWL Louisiana he came to New Orleans from his home in Nashville last week for the trial.

“I’m relieved, but also not terribly excited that it’s a lesser sentence, so a little bit conflicted I think,” he said.

Gioe Thibodeaux’s loved ones have waited more than a year for the trial to begin.

According to the NOPD, she was sitting in her Jeep on St. Peter Street in the early morning of June 30, when a black Camaro approached with three people inside. One got out, attempted to rob her, then shot her. She died at the scene.
