Detroit — A half-century after it sank into Lake Superior, killing all 29 crew members aboard, the fate of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of Michiganians.

Around 200 nautical enthusiasts came to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle Park on Monday for the Detroit Historical Society and Great Lakes Maritime Institute's 26th annual Lost Mariners Remembrance program.

The event included songs, ceremony and a new video produced by the Historical Society in commemoration of the milestone anniversary.

"Here in Michigan, we don't treat the Fitzgerald as a distant story, we feel it," said Elana Rugh, president and CEO of the Detroit Historical Society. "We know the way a November storm can turn the water into something alive."
