Two off-duty female police officers have been recommended for bravery awards after they confronted a machete-wielding teenager at an Alice Springs shopping centre.

Onlookers watched in shock on Monday afternoon as a family dispute turned violent at the Yeperenye Shopping Centre.

Video of the incident shows a teenager, who was wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet on his ankle, swinging a machete at an elderly man.

An off-duty police officer, who was at the shopping centre selling poppies ahead of Remembrance Day, then intervenes.

She can be seen confronting the teenager before chasing him out of the shopping centre.

It’s understood the woman was one of two off-duty female officers who intervened in the disturbance before uniformed police arrived a short time later.
