When the government shutdown began more than 40 days ago, the National Park Service (NPS) lost its federal funding. Two-thirds of staff were furloughed, and all but essential duties were paused. Ancillary activities, including updating the national park social media accounts, including the main NPS account, have not been possible.

The main Instagram account for NPS, which normally shares everything from educational tools to the winner of Katmai's 2025 Fat Bear Week competition , has not been updated since the shutdown began, until today, when it shared a collaboration with Parris Island celebrating 250 years of the U.S. Marine Corps.
