JAMESVILLE, MARTIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - The Jamesville community held its first community-wide flag retirement ceremony Monday evening, honoring Veterans Day with the proper disposal of worn and tattered American flags.
For some, when they hear flag burning, they may think of protesting. But burning a flag is also the proper way to dispose of it when it’s worn, tattered or ripped, which is what Jamesville residents, VFW Post 4023 and Legion Post 164 did Monday evening.
When American flags become worn or tattered, they should be retired respectfully. The proper methods are burning them in a ceremony or folding and burying them.
