A teenager's tragic quad bike crash death has been blamed on incorrect wheel nuts installed by his father, a coroner has found.

Modifications to the bike were made two weeks before the 16-year-old's death in 2023 in rural Tasmania, which has prompted a reminder about the risk of do-it-yourself maintenance.

The body of the boy, whose name hasn't been provided, was found on a gravel forestry road with one of the red Honda's rear wheels no longer attached.

The cause of his death was the incorrect fitting of after-market rear wheels, one of which failed, coroner Simon Cooper said in findings published on Tuesday.
