DICKINSON, ND (KXNET) — A 34-year-old man has been pronounced dead after being shot by Dickinson police while reportedly holding a gun.

According to the Dickinson Police Department, officers were informed by witnesses that a man had fired a gun several times outside the emergency room of St. Alexius Hospital Monday evening. Before this, the man's family called police around 5 p.m. and asked them to conduct a welfare check due to him making suicidal comments.

Officers found the man outside the hospital, and say he was still holding the gun. They established a perimeter, and attempted to persuade the man to drop the gun and accept help.

Police reported that at one point, an officer perceived an immediate threat and fired at the man. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
