BECKLEY -- Longtime Hurricane soccer coach Jim Dagostine chided the program’s current head coach Kent Bailey about the lack of state championships won by the latest team leader.
Dagostine guided Hurricane to Class AAA state titles in 2012 and 2017 with a short retirement between stints.
It’s understandable he might tease Bailey, whose Hurricane teams came up short at the state championship twice before finally winning on Saturday in Beckley at Paul Cline Stadium.
Bailey’s win over Woodrow Wilson, 3-1 in penalty kicks following regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods with the teams tied 1-1, avenged a runner-up finish in Class AAA to the Flying Eagles.
Hurricane had also been runner-up in 2023 to George Washington.
