President Trump’s proposal to use tariff revenue to pay individuals “at least” $2,000 is facing legal and logistical roadblocks, as well as skepticism from some on the right.

Trump has floated the idea of sending dividends to the American people multiple times throughout his time in office, but his most recent proposal over the weekend comes as his administration is simultaneously facing public frustration over affordability and a Supreme Court case that threatens to undercut his sweeping use of tariffs.

Kevin Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council, said the dividend payments would have to first be passed by Congress and then railed against the Biden administration’s handling of inflation, arguing consumers lost purchasing power.
