A former state official’s son who was 16 when he fatally shot a 79-year-old man and his 68-year-old sister in their Stoughton home in 1982 has been granted parole from his life sentence, records show.

The state Parole Board voted 4-2 to grant release to William M. Shipps Jr., 59, after he completes 90 days in minimum security, according to an Oct. 28 ruling.

Shipps fatally shot John J. Lucey and Esther L. King on July 24, 1980, according to the ruling and past Globe reporting.

Robbery was the suspected motive because several rooms in the siblings’ home had been ransacked, according to Globe reports, which at the time identified Shipps as the son of a onetime state labor commissioner in former Governor Edward J. King’s administration.
