Quick look at Tuesday's news:

  • The Senate passed a funding package to end the record-breaking shutdown.
  • President Trump will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony to mark Veterans Day.
  • Lung cancer is becoming more common among young women. Here's why.

Is the shutdown over?

Not so fast. The Senate on Monday passed a funding package to end the record-breaking shutdown, putting the federal government on a path to reopening in the coming days.

A group of eight Democrats again defected from their party to send the legislation, on a 60-40 vote, to the House of Representatives, where it will likely pass later this week. Then, the bills will go to the desk of President Donald Trump, who has indicated he will sign them into law.

  • Flight disruptions across the United States were expected to rise through the week, even as the Senate passed the funding package.
  • President Trump threatened to dock the pay of air traffic controllers who don’t report to work.
  • A progressive group angry the deal doesn't include any of Democrats' key demands wants Sen. Chuck Schumer to resign.

Celebrating America's veterans

Veterans Day is Tuesday. The celebration of Veterans Day, a federal holiday, dates back to Nov. 11, 1918, when "temporary cessation of hostilities," or an armistice, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Here's what to know about banks, post offices and shipping services, and whether or not they'll be open on Veterans Day.

  • From Iwo Jima to Vietnam, look back at the history of the U.S. Marine Corps, which celebrated its 250th birthday Monday.

The Supreme Court rejects same-sex marriage challenge

The Supreme Court decided not to revisit its landmark ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, leaving undisturbed a decade-old decision that some conservative justices oppose but that LGBTQ+ couples have relied on to legalize their relationships and create families. There has not been the same kind of conservative movement to take back marriage rights for same-sex couples as there was to get rid of the constitutional right to an abortion.

The women getting lung cancer

'It was really unfair. I do everything I can in my control to take care of myself… It did not make sense that I had something that was associated with an unhealthy person and unhealthy habits.'

~Christy Houvouras, 36, a mother of two from Huntington, West Virginia, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in July. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says up to 20% of new diagnoses are now made in people who have never smoked — and they’re mostly occurring in women. Cancer experts told USA TODAY radon levels in the home, air pollution and genetic mutations are mainly driving this trend.

FDA removes black box warning on hormone therapy for menopause

For the past decade, Dr. Heather Hirsch has tried to convince women that hormone therapy drugs are the best way to treat symptoms of menopause and perimenopause. But warning labels on estrogen have scared many women away from getting the care they need. Now, the Food and Drug Administration is asking drug companies to remove these labels, known as black box warnings, on hormone therapy drugs containing estrogen. This change will be monumental in helping more women manage disruptive menopause and perimenopause symptoms.

Photo of the day: Border chief's photo op draws ire from Chicago's mayor

The chief enforcer of President Trump’s Operation Midway Blitz crackdown on immigration enforcement posed for photos in the snow in front of Chicago’s iconic The Bean sculpture Monday, sparking outrage from top city and state brass. "Wicked and vile," Mayor Brandon Johnson said on X of the photo op. Johnson has publicly complained about federal agents' use of force during the Midway Blitz campaign, calling on the United Nations to investigate federal immigration raids that have seen officers deploy chemical agents on residential streets and daycare workers detained in front of stunned families.
