CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (KKTV) - A 28-year-old man who faced up to 13 years in prison for hitting an elderly couple with his car was sentenced Monday to a few years in a halfway house.

On Feb. 22, Samuel Michael got behind the wheel after drinking, and while driving in Castle Rock, struck Michelle and Kraig Kazda. Kraig Kazda died from his injuries two months later.

In September, Michael pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide.

Ahead of Monday’s sentencing, the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office and members of the Kazda family asked for the maximum prison sentence. The defense and Michael’s family argued that he he had no prior criminal record, remained at the scene after the crash to render aid, and has shown remorse for what happened.
