Target’s newest policy for employees is part of a company-wide effort to lift sales and spirits ahead of the holiday season.

The retailer’s new directive is mandating that employees smile, greet and wave at any customer that approaches them within 10 feet, according to Bloomberg News.

The mandate also goes even further to state that if a customer comes within 4 feet of an employee, the worker should ask if customers need assistance or engage in other pleasant small talk.
