The longest government shutdown in history has halted SNAP benefits for 41.7 million Americans. While political debates play out on the national level, the immediate, painful consequences are being felt right here by thousands of our neighbors, (9.4% of Longmont households receive SNAP). Without this vital support, many working parents, seniors on fixed incomes and children will go hungry.
The withdrawal of this crucial government support has placed an unprecedented strain on our local food banks and assistance centers. Organizations like HOPE (Homeless Outreach Providing Encouragement), the Our Center and several others are essentially serving as first responders, trying to bridge a gap that is rapidly widening.
